Euchre — free online Card game

The Midwest's favourite partnership game: order it up, trust your bowers, go alone — and don't get euchred.

Euchre is free to play in your browser with a computer partner against two computer rivals: the fast trick-taking game of the American Midwest, Ontario and the English West Country. Only 24 cards are used, nine through ace, and everyone gets five. One card is turned up: going round the table, each player may order the dealer to pick it up and make its suit trumps, or pass. If all four pass, the card is turned down and anyone may name another suit — and if it comes back to the dealer, the dealer is stuck and must choose. The jack of trumps is the right bower, the highest card in the game; the other jack of the same colour is the left bower and counts as a trump. The team that made trumps needs at least three of the five tricks for a point, or all five for two. Feeling strong? Go alone without your partner: sweep all five and it's four points. Fall short and you're euchred, and the other side scores two. First team to 10 wins. Three computer levels. No download, no sign-up.

Quick start

  1. Press Start. Your partner sits at the top; the rivals sit left and right.
  2. When it's your call, press ORDER UP (or PICK IT UP if you're the dealer) or PASS. In the second round tap a suit. Tick GO ALONE first if you want to play without your partner.
  3. Tap a highlighted card to play it. You must follow the suit led if you can.
  4. Take three tricks when your side made trumps; stop the rivals from taking three when they did. First team to 10 wins.

How to play Euchre

  1. 24 cards (9, 10, J, Q, K, A in each suit), five to each player. The next card is turned face up.
  2. Round one: starting left of the dealer, each player may order the dealer to pick up the turned card, making its suit trumps, or pass. The dealer picks it up and buries one card face down.
  3. Round two: if everyone passed, the card is turned down and players may name any other suit as trumps. If it comes back to the dealer, the dealer must name a suit (stick the dealer).
  4. Trumps from high to low: the jack of trumps (right bower), the other jack of the same colour (left bower), then A, K, Q, 10, 9. The left bower belongs to the trump suit for every purpose.
  5. The player left of the dealer leads. Follow suit if you can; otherwise play any card, including a trump. The highest trump wins, otherwise the highest card of the suit led.
  6. Scoring: the makers score 1 for three or four tricks and 2 for all five (a march). A player going alone scores 4 for a march. If the makers take fewer than three tricks they are euchred and the defenders score 2.
  7. The first team to 10 points wins the game.

Controls

  • Bidding buttons appear in the middle of the table on your turn
  • Tick GO ALONE before ordering up or naming a suit to play alone
  • As dealer after a pick-up, tap the card you want to bury
  • Tap a highlighted card to play it; greyed cards can't be played now
  • Enter or Space lets the computer make the current choice for you

Tips

  • Count the bowers: three trumps including a bower plus an off-suit ace is usually enough to order up.
  • Think before ordering up to the rivals' dealer — you hand them a trump.
  • When your side made trumps, lead trumps to pull the rivals' trumps; as defenders, lead off-suit aces.
  • Don't trump your partner's winning trick; throw your lowest card instead.
  • Go alone with both bowers and the ace of trumps, or a bower and strong backup.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I play my jack of diamonds on a diamond lead?

When hearts are trumps, the J♦ is the left bower and counts as a heart, so it can't follow diamonds.

What is stick the dealer?

If nobody names trumps in the second round, the dealer must. It keeps every hand in play and is the common online rule.

Is there a no-trump or farmer's hand option?

No, this version plays the standard American rules without house variations.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free in your browser, with no download and no account.
