Xiangqi, or Chinese chess, is free to play in your browser with no download and no sign-up. Play against a computer opponent with every rule in place: the two generals may not face each other, horses can be blocked and elephants cannot cross the river. Choose one of four AI levels: Novice, Casual, Intermediate and Grandmaster.
How to play Xiangqi (Chinese Chess)
- Each side has a general, two advisors, two elephants, two horses, two chariots, two cannons and five soldiers.
- Checkmate the opposing general to win. The two generals may never face each other on an open file.
- Horses move one point straight then one diagonally and are blocked by a piece in the way; elephants move two points diagonally and cannot cross the river.
- Cannons move like chariots but capture by jumping over exactly one piece; soldiers may also move sideways once they have crossed the river.
