Reversi — free online Board game

Flank the computer’s discs and flip the board to your colour.

Reversi is a free online board game against the computer. You play black on an 8×8 board and move first: place a disc so that it traps a line of white discs between two of yours, and every disc in that line flips to black. Legal moves are highlighted, a player with no legal move must pass, and whoever owns the most discs when the board fills up wins. Choose easy, normal or hard, undo a move when you need to, and track your wins. Play in your browser with no download and no sign-up.

Quick start

  1. Choose easy, normal or hard.
  2. You play black and move first: tap one of the highlighted squares.
  3. Finish with more discs than the computer.

How to play Reversi

  1. The 8×8 board starts with two black and two white discs in the centre.
  2. On your turn, place a black disc so that one or more straight lines of white discs — across, down or diagonal — are trapped between it and another black disc.
  3. Every trapped white disc flips to black. One move can flip several lines at once.
  4. If you have no legal move you must pass, and the same goes for the computer. Legal squares are highlighted for you.
  5. The game ends when neither side can move. Whoever has more discs on the board wins.

Controls

  • Place a disc: tap or click a highlighted square
  • Take back a move: the undo button
  • Start again: the restart button or a difficulty button

Strategy tips

  • Corners can never be flipped back — they are the most valuable squares.
  • Avoid the squares diagonally next to an empty corner; they often hand the corner to your opponent.
  • Flipping many discs early is rarely good. Having more moves available than your opponent matters more.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is the computer?

Easy grabs whichever move flips the most discs, normal also values strong squares such as corners, and hard searches four moves ahead. Start on easy and move up when you win regularly.

Is Reversi the same as other disc-flipping board games?

Reversi is the classic public-domain name for this game; the rules here are the standard 8×8 rules with the usual four-disc start.

Is Reversi free?

Yes. Reversi is completely free to play in your browser, with no download, no account and no in-game purchases.

Is my progress saved?

Your win record against each difficulty is saved locally in your browser on this device. Clearing site data resets it.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Reversi is built for touch screens as well as mouse and keyboard, and it fits portrait and landscape screens.
