Klotski — free online Puzzle game
Slide the blocks and free the big red square — 15 levels from 10 to 124 moves.
Klotski is the classic sliding block puzzle, free to play in your browser. On a 4×5 board, slide the wooden blocks until the big 2×2 block reaches the exit at the bottom middle. Blocks only slide, never lift, and moving one block any distance counts as a single move. Fifteen levels run from a 10-move warm-up to a 124-move brain-twister, including the famous opening known in China as Heng Dao Li Ma, solved in 81 moves at best. Each level shows its proven minimum, so you can chase a perfect solve. No download, no sign-up.
Quick start
- Press Start. Level 1 needs only 10 moves; use ◀ ▶ to change level.
- Drag a block to slide it — it follows your finger cell by cell, even round corners. A block that can only move one way also moves with a tap.
- Bring the big red block down to the exit at the bottom middle.
How to play Klotski
- The board is 4 squares wide and 5 tall, with two empty squares. Blocks are 2×2, 1×2, 2×1 or 1×1.
- Blocks slide into empty squares; they can never be lifted or turned.
- Moving one block any distance in one go — even round a corner — counts as one move.
- You win when the 2×2 block reaches the bottom middle, above the exit.
- Each level shows the proven minimum number of moves; match it for three stars.
Controls
- Move a block: drag it, or tap a block that can only go one way
- Keyboard: Tab picks a block, arrow keys move it
- Change level: ◀ and ▶; after a solve, Next level
Tips
- Work on moving the two empty squares, not the big block: the big block can only move when both gaps sit beside it.
- Keep the 1×1 blocks flexible — they are what let the long blocks change columns.
- The classic opening (level 11) takes 81 moves at best; the hardest level here takes 124.
Frequently asked questions
How were the minimum moves worked out?
A breadth-first search over every reachable position finds the shortest solution for each level, counting one block's continuous move as one move. The same search is re-run in the game's automated tests.
Is Klotski the same as Huarong Dao?
Yes. It is known as Huarong Dao in China, Hakoiri Musume in Japan and L'Âne rouge in France; the board and the goal are the same.
Is Klotski free?
Yes. It is completely free to play in your browser, with no download, no account and no in-game purchases.
