2048 is a free online sliding number puzzle. Swipe or use the arrow keys to move every tile on the 4×4 board at once; two tiles with the same number merge into their sum. Each move adds a new 2 or 4, so the board fills up unless you plan your merges. Reach the 2048 tile to win, then keep going for a higher score. One-step undo helps you recover from a slip, and your best score is saved locally. Play in your browser with no download and no sign-up.

Quick start

  1. Press start.
  2. Swipe, or use the arrow keys, to slide all tiles in one direction.
  3. Merge equal numbers until you build a 2048 tile.

How to play 2048

  1. The game is played on a 4×4 board that starts with two tiles.
  2. Each move slides every tile as far as it can go in the chosen direction.
  3. When two tiles with the same number collide they merge into one tile worth their sum, and the sum is added to your score.
  4. After every move that changes the board a new tile appears: a 2 most of the time, sometimes a 4.
  5. Make a 2048 tile to win. You can keep going for a higher score; the game ends when the board is full and no merge is possible.

Controls

  • Move tiles: swipe on the board, arrow keys or WASD
  • Mouse: drag across the board in a direction
  • Undo the last move: the undo button or U (one step)

Strategy tips

  • Keep your largest tile in one corner and build the row next to it in descending order.
  • Avoid the direction that pulls the big tile out of its corner unless there is no other move.
  • Merge small tiles early so the board does not clog with 2s and 4s.
