Crazy Eights — free online Card game

Match the suit or rank, play wild eights and be first to empty your hand.

Crazy Eights is the classic shedding card game, free to play in your browser against one, two or three computer opponents. Play a card that matches the top of the discard pile by suit or by rank; eights are wild and can be played on anything, and whoever plays one calls the next suit. If you cannot play, draw from the deck until you can. The first player to get rid of every card wins the round and scores the cards left in the other hands: fifty for an eight, ten for a picture card, face value for the rest. First to 100 points wins the game. Three difficulty levels; the hardest counts cards and remembers which suits you are out of. No download, no sign-up.

Quick start

  1. Press Start. Pick 2, 3 or 4 players and a difficulty in the side panel.
  2. Your cards are at the bottom; cards you can play right now have a yellow outline.
  3. Tap a card to play it. If nothing fits, the deck pulses — tap it to draw.
  4. Play an eight and choose the next suit. Empty your hand before the computers do.

How to play Crazy Eights

  1. Two players get seven cards each; with three or four players everyone gets five. The next card is turned up to start the discard pile (an eight turned up is buried in the deck and replaced).
  2. On your turn, play one card that matches the top card of the discard pile by suit or by rank — a ♥7 on a ♥K, or a ♣7 on that ♥7.
  3. Eights are wild: an eight can go on any card, and the player who plays it calls the suit that must be followed next.
  4. If you have no card that fits, draw from the deck one card at a time until you get one that does, then play it. When the deck runs out, the discard pile (except the top card) is shuffled to make a new deck; if there is nothing left to draw, you pass.
  5. The first player to play their last card wins the round and scores the cards left in everyone else's hands: 50 for each eight, 10 for each king, queen or jack, 1 for an ace and face value for the rest.
  6. If nobody can play or draw, the round is blocked: the player with the lowest count wins it and scores the difference to each other hand. The first player to reach 100 points wins the game.

Controls

  • Play: tap a card with a yellow outline
  • Draw: tap the deck (only when you have nothing to play)
  • Eight: tap a suit to call it; the suggested suit has a yellow ring
  • Keyboard: Enter or Space plays a sensible card for you, or draws
  • New game: the New game button; changing the number of players starts a new game

Strategy tips

  • Keep your eights for when you are stuck — an eight is the only card that always fits, and it costs 50 points if you are caught holding it.
  • When you have a choice, stay in or switch to the suit you hold most of, so you have follow-up plays.
  • A rank match is a free suit change: playing ♣Q on ♥Q moves the game to clubs without spending an eight.
  • Shed kings, queens and jacks early; if somebody else goes out, every card left in your hand counts for them.
  • Watch when an opponent draws: they had nothing in that suit. Switching back to it when they are down to one or two cards can stop them going out.

Frequently asked questions

Can I draw even when I have a card I can play?

No. In this version you draw only when nothing in your hand fits, and then you keep drawing until you get a card you can play. That is the classic rule from the card-game books.

Are there action cards like draw two, skip or reverse?

No. This is classic Crazy Eights with a standard 52-card deck: only the eights are special. Action-card variants are house rules and are not used here.

How do the computer levels differ?

Easy plays any card that fits. Normal keeps its eights, stays in its long suits and sheds high cards. Hard also counts the cards that have been played and remembers which suits you have run out of, and uses that to leave you without a play.

Is Crazy Eights free?

Yes. It is completely free to play in your browser, with no download, no account and no in-game purchases.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Every card is a tap target; with many cards your hand wraps onto a second row. Landscape gives the most room.
